1. What is the CTT | Timing?Â
The CTT | Timing is a web app to help timekeepers and organisers run time trial events more smoothly. It replaces the need for synchronised stopwatches by allowing timekeepers to simply tap their phones or tablets at key moments. The app does all the timing calculations and updates the results automatically — live, as the event happens.Â
The app can be used with a phone, tablet, or laptop — though phones and tablets are ideal for use out on the course.
💡 All the screens are connected online and update in real time. This means as soon as someone taps a time, it’s instantly reflected across all the other screens — including the Results Board. A mobile phone signal is required for everything to stay in sync.
‼️To use it, all riders must be registered on the CTT system, have a valid rider profile and have a start time on the event's start list. If necessary, this can all be achieved using a phone right before the start of the event.
This document covers the screens ready to use for individual events.

2. Why use CTT | Timing?
-
đź•’ No stopwatch syncing needed
-
👆 Just tap — the app handles the rest
-
đź”— All screens are linked and update in real time
-
📊 Instant, accurate results with live positions, visible to anyone with access to the app
-
📱 Simple to use on phones or tablets out on the course

3. Accessing CTT | Timing
Named Timing Administrators access CTT | Timing for their events from the website's homepage www.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk (đź”—). Hover over (or tap on a phone) My Account and select CTT | Timing. If you are timekeeping an event and cannot access it, please ask the organiser to add you as a Timing Administrator as explained above.Â
Â
4. Using CTT | Timing
This section focuses on the following four screens accessed via the menu screen shown far right.
The Results Board (đź”—) will be explained in the next section.
Entry and Sign On screens will be added as part of a future release. The Clock screen displays time of day in hh:mm:ss.t format.
Important: Before use, please set screen brightness and volume on your device to high.
On entering CTT | Timing, you will first be asked to select an event (shown right), which will then take you to the system's menu screen for that event (shown far right).
  4.1 Start Control
The Start Control screen helps you start riders accurately at 30-second or one-minute intervals, according to how the Start List is configured.
To enter Start Control, tap the button and select Enable Start Timer. The app will announce "Timer Started" and start counting down to the start time of your event. At event-start time, it starts counting down to the set-off time of the first rider.Â
The app audibly announces the next rider by name and includes a large visual countdown timer and an audible countdown: “30 seconds”, “15 seconds”, “10… 5, 4, 3, 2, 1… GO!”
‼️The timer uses time-of-day so riders must start at the actual times specified on the start sheet — the app tracks each rider’s official start time from that point.
  4.2 Split Control
If you want to capture split times during the event (for example, at a halfway point or at key climbs), the app allows you to do this with minimal effort.
Before the race, the organiser configures how many splits they want.
During the race, a marshal at the split point simply taps the rider's number on the screen as they pass by. The clock time is recorded on the right of the screen and the rider's split time is recorded with their number as shown.
Split times are different from Lap times for multi-lap events, which are recorded by the finish controller as explained below (đź”—)
S1 - indicates split time 1; S2 - indicates split time 2, etc.
The app records that time and simultaneously updates the Results Board (đź”—) automatically.
 4.3 Finish Control
The Finish Control screen allows for accurate timing, even when riders finish close together.
Here’s how it works:
-
As each rider crosses the line, the timekeeper taps the running timer, bottom right (see screens below). This creates a list of finish times on screen — in the order they occurred. Rider's numbers turn from white to blue to indicate there are times waiting to be assigned to riders. If you are using a device with a keyboard, tapping the spacebar achieves the same. If the timer was tapped accidentally, the time can be cleared.
-
The timekeeper then assigns each time to the correct rider by tapping the rider’s number.
This approach means:
- The times are recorded as they happen, with minimal delay.
- The timekeeper can take a few extra seconds to work out which rider crossed in what order, without losing accuracy.
- You don’t need to subtract start times manually — the app does the calculation and shows the rider’s final time automatically.
The screens below show an example:
- Riders 1 and 2 have already finished; their times are shown on the first screen.
- Riders 4,3 and 5 cross the line, in quick succession, in that order. The timekeeper taps the running timer, bottom right (yellow arrow 1), as each rider finishes.
- Times (i.e. time of day) are recorded as 16:10:41.7; 16:19:43.3 and 16:19:44.7 respectively as shown in the middle screen (they can be cancelled by tapping the red X). Rider numbers turn blue to indicate numbered buttons are active and times need to be allocated.
- The timekeeper then allocates those times to each rider by tapping the appropriate button: 4, 3 and then 5 in this example (yellow arrow 2).
- The riders finish times are then calculated and the buttons are updated as shown on the right-hand screen. The buttons turn white to indicate times have been allocated, ready for you to record riders 6 and 7 when they cross the line.
The Results Board (đź”—))Â is simultaneously updated as each finish time is allocated.
Lap Times for multi-lap events are recorded by the finish timekeeper exactly as described above for finish time. Each time a rider crosses the line, the finish timekeeper assigns them their lap time. The process is repeated according to the number of laps set when the timing app is configured for the event. The final time assigned is the rider's finish time.Â
4.4 Event Control
At any time during or after the event, the organiser and timekeepers may access the Event Control screen to apply or amend the time or status attributed to a rider as shown below. In the example shown, rider 6 is a DNF. Tap "6" then "DNF" which updates the number button as shown on the right-hand screen. The Results Board is simultaneously updated. Incorrectly recorded times may also be amended in this way using the number pad shown on the middle screen.
Â
6. The Results Board
The Results Board screen shows the current standings, live, as the event progresses.
- It works on phones and tablets but looks best on a laptop or projector — ideal for use at race HQ for example.
- Every time a rider's split or finish time is recorded, the board updates instantly.
- It calculates:
- Actual ride times (start to finish)
- Current positions (1st, 2nd, 3rd etc.)
- It displays both overall result and result by category as shown below
- The layout and number of positions shown (top 3 in this case) are configurable via the settings button, bottom right (yellow arrow)
There’s no need for spreadsheets, calculators, or synchronised stopwatches — the app does it all for you.
